How our Drone Surveying Company was born…

About Me

Sussex Drone Surveys is a Drone Surveying Company, founded by me, Alex O'Connor. I work across Sussex, Kent, Surrey and London for a brilliant array of clients.

I combined my experience within the building management sector with my personal interest in filming and flying drones. We offer Roof Top Condition Reporting, Targeted Inspections, Thermal Inspections and Filming and Photography.

My Previous Experience

My career has been within the leasehold management industry for over 10 years, and I continue to be active within this sector. But the thankless slog of working in property management is what drove me to rethink my life and career.

I sought to combine enjoyment and work that depended on me from beginning to end but with a satisfactory outcome. No chasing my tail. No sense of permanent frustration or even fear that my decisions might have a damaging effect on others. That rethink brought my Drone Surveying Company into being.

I remember one day asking a surveyor for a quote to drone survey a small block of flats. The building had water ingress into the top floor flat so we knew there were issues up there but did not know to what extent.

The cost that came back from the surveyor was £2800 + VAT which in my opinion was ludicrous bearing in mind my hobby and the fact I had my drone sitting in my bag at the time.

So with the PFCO (Permission for Commercial Operation) in hand I took my drone out to find the issue. After flying directly upward 5 meters the problem was clear within about 6 seconds and I didn't need a surveyor to tell me it was bad; There was a hole in the roof which the squirrels had made and every time it rained water was coming in.

Biggest struggles within a Drone Survey Company

One of the biggest things I struggled with when setting up my business was the new routine. An average week for me now starts on Sunday evening when I take a look at what I have booked in over the next few days.

I make a list so when I wake up on Monday morning all I have to really think about is coffee and getting as much done as I can before the kids get up.
